Things to Do Around Maffra & Central Gippsland

The Berry Dairy makes an easy starting point for a day trip or weekend exploring Maffra and Central Gippsland.

Come for strawberry picking, lunch at the farm café or one of our farm experiences, then stay a little longer and discover some of the great food, accommodation and outdoor experiences close by.

Whether you’re travelling with the kids, bringing your dog, planning a food and wine weekend or looking for somewhere to camp, there is plenty to turn a visit to The Berry Dairy into a proper Gippsland getaway.

Start at The Berry Dairy

Spend a few hours or most of the day with us in Maffra.

Maffco Brewery

Right in Maffra, Maffco combines locally brewed beer, food and the story of one of the town's historic buildings (it used to be an old diary factory!) It makes an easy addition to a day exploring Maffra and the surrounding farming district - and even has a playground and is dog friendly too!

Tinamba Hotel

For a longer lunch or dinner, Tinamba Hotel is an award-winning regional dining destination with a strong focus on locally sourced Gippsland produce - including Berry Dairy strawberries.

Glenmaggie Winery

A family-owned, single-estate winery at Tinamba West, Glenmaggie Winery combines award-winning Gippsland wines with a relaxed cellar door and share-style food menu. Sit out on the deck, enjoy views across the surrounding countryside and make it part of a longer food-and-farm day around Maffra and Tinamba.

The cellar door is also dog friendly, which makes it a good addition to a dog-friendly Gippsland weekend.

Blue Gables Winery

Blue Gables is a family-owned boutique vineyard and cellar door at Maffra West Upper, overlooking the Newry Flats and Macalister Irrigation District.

Stop in for estate wine tastings, local cheese platters and wood-fired pizzas, with views across the vineyard and surrounding Gippsland farmland. It's an easy way to add a winery stop to a day visiting The Berry Dairy and exploring the Maffra area.

There's Plenty More to Explore

Maffra is surrounded by small towns, rivers, lakes, walking and cycling trails, wineries, country pubs and some of Gippsland's best-known farming landscapes.

Nearby you can explore the Macalister River, Gippsland Plains Rail Trail, Lake Glenmaggie and the towns of Tinamba, Heyfield, Stratford and Sale, or head further into the High Country and wider Wellington region. The official Middle of Everywhere visitor guide is a great place to find more attractions, accommodation, events and ideas for building your trip.

Montana on the Macalister

Set along the banks of the Macalister River at Glenmaggie, Montana on the Macalister is a relaxed family-friendly campground with powered and unpowered sites, river frontage and plenty of space to spread out.

It’s a good option for visitors wanting to combine a Berry Dairy visit with a few nights of camping, swimming, fishing or exploring Lake Glenmaggie and the surrounding High Country. The campground is also pet friendly, with an off-lead area available for dogs.

🐾 A great option for a dog-friendly camping getaway in Central Gippsland.

Mewburn Park Retreats

A rural stay between Maffra and Tinamba, with private self-contained accommodation surrounded by open farmland. The Gippsland Plains Rail Trail runs directly across the road, making it a good base for exploring the area by car or bike.

Motel 3858

Located in nearby Heyfield, Motel 3858 has renovated king rooms with private courtyards and is particularly useful for visitors travelling with dogs — all ten rooms are dog friendly and pets can stay at no extra charge.

🐾 A good option for a dog-friendly Berry Dairy getaway.

Paradise Valley Campgrounds

For a camping stay, Paradise Valley at Glenmaggie offers a large riverside property with powered and unpowered camping as well as cabins. Visitors can kayak, fish, bushwalk, ride bikes or simply spend some time beside the river. It is also pet friendly.

Make a Gippsland Trip of It

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Day Out

Start the morning with strawberry picking at The Berry Dairy, then stay for lunch and real fruit ice cream at the farm café.

Spend some time with the animals, playgrounds and Discovery Trail, then choose how to spend your afternoon:

Either finish with a Dairy Farm Tractor Tour through our working farm, or head into Maffra to Maffco Brewery where the kids can play while the adults enjoy a locally made beer or cider.

🍷 Food & Farm Weekend

Start your day at The Berry Dairy with strawberry picking, farm animals and lunch at the café.

Continue into Maffra for a drink at Maffco, then book dinner at Tinamba Hotel before staying locally at Mewburn Park Retreats.

The following morning, jump on your bikes and explore the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail, which runs directly across the road from Mewburn Park Retreats. You can ride towards Maffra — and even make The Berry Dairy part of your cycling route.

I really like that last bit because it connects accommodation + trail + Berry Dairy instead of just listing three unrelated businesses.

🐾 Dog-Friendly Gippsland Getaway

Bring your dog to The Berry Dairy and make use of our fully fenced off-leash dog park while you enjoy the farm café and outdoor areas.

Stay overnight at dog-friendly Motel 3858 in Heyfield, then spend the following day exploring more of Central Gippsland.

You could also mention Montana on the Macalister here as another dog-friendly stay if you want to give people a camping option.

⛺ Farm & Camping Escape

Spend the day at The Berry Dairy with strawberry picking, lunch and a Dairy Farm Tractor Tour.

Then head to Paradise Valley Campground or Montana on the Macalister for a riverside camping stay.

The next day, add fishing, kayaking, bushwalking or a visit to Lake Glenmaggie before heading home.
