Top 5 family activities in Gippsland– from a local!

Planning a trip from Melbourne or looking for a local weekend adventure? Here’s your ultimate day (or two-day) itinerary the whole family will love.

Gippsland is fast becoming one of Victoria’s favourite family destinations and as a local, I can confirm the hype is well and truly deserved. Whether you’re travelling from the city or you’re a fellow Gippsland local looking for something new, there’s so much to explore right on our doorstep. From farm experiences to natural swimming spots and family-friendly eateries, this region is packed with activities both kids and parents will genuinely enjoy.

Here’s your go-to itinerary, perfect for a big day out or stretched into a relaxed weekend escape.

1. Little Sherwood Petting Zoo & Cottages, a perfect first stop

Just outside Drouin, Little Sherwood is the ultimate pit stop for little legs. With an epic playground, a wide range of animals to cuddle and feed, and a cute café serving coffee and snacks, it’s a great way to break up the drive or kick off your Gippsland adventure.

There’s also cottage accommodation onsite, perfect if you’re turning your day trip into a full weekend getaway and want to wake up surrounded by paddocks and fresh air.

2. The Berry Dairy, strawberries, lunch & laid-back farm fun

Next up, head to The Berry Dairy in Maffra (that’s us!) a Gippsland farm experience and a hit with kids, parents, and even teens in need of a screen break.

Pick your own sweet, sun-ripened strawberries, enjoy a lunch of locally sourced produce at our farmgate café, and let the kids burn off energy on the playground while you relax with a local wine or craft beer. You’ll also meet our resident farm animals, including highland cows, baby calves, and friendly goats, all in a real working dairy farm setting.

And of course we have a large playground to ensure kids burn off some energy!

3. Maffco Brewery & Distillery, a chill spot for parents

If the grown-ups are keen for one more stop, Maffco offers the best of both worlds, locally brewed drinks in a relaxed, family-friendly setting. Their spacious outdoor beer garden has a playground for the kids, so everyone’s entertained while you enjoy a tasting paddle or gin cocktail in peace.

It’s just a few minutes down the road from The Berry Dairy, so an easy add-on if the kids still have some energy and you’re not ready to head home.

4. Cool off or explore – Blue Pools or Apex Park, Stratford

If the sun’s out, make your way to the Blue Pools in Briagolong. A natural swimming hole surrounded by towering gums and cliffs, perfect for a refreshing dip or picnic.

Not quite swimming weather? No problem! Stratford’s Apex Park is a fantastic all-ages playground with plenty of space to run, climb, and explore. Even better, it’s right next to the Gippsland Jersey Milkshake Van, which means cold creamy treats and hot drinks are just a few steps away.

5. Family-Friendly dinner options to wrap up the day

After a big day, you’ll want a spot that ticks all the boxes, great food, easy parking, and space for the kids to unwind.

Top picks:

  • Green Olive in Traralgon – relaxed dining and a kids’ play area.
  • Maffra Community Sports Club – casual atmosphere and local favourites.
  • Graze Bistro in Sale – kid-friendly with plenty of space and variety, on a Sunday catch the twilight greyhound racing!

All are welcoming, fuss-free, and serve up hearty meals to finish the day on a high.

Whether you’re planning a quick day trip or a whole weekend of fun, Gippsland makes it easy to slow down and enjoy real moments with the people you love. With hands-on activities, amazing food, and natural beauty around every corner, it’s no wonder so many families are falling in love with the region.

And hey, if you visit The Berry Dairy, come say hi. We’d love to hear where your Gippsland adventure takes you next.
